Sex trafficking & Prostitution – MK4 EP13

Sex Trafficking

Sex trafficking is characterized by sexual exploitation through force, fraud or coercion.

Worldwide, false promises of employment in major cities are ways in which traffickers bait and enslave their victims – both adults and minors.

The UN’s International Labour Organization estimates 3.8 million adults and 1 million children were victims of forced sexual exploitation around the world in 2016.

Profits from forced sexual labor are estimated at $99 billion worldwide.

Over 400,000 people in Africa are victims of sexual exploitation. Victims are still arrested for crimes or sex work, they were forced to commit by traffickers

Prostitution

Prostitution is the practice or occupation of engaging in sexual activity with someone for payment. It is sometimes referred to euphemistically as “the world’s oldest profession” in the English-speaking world.

The UN estimates that there are 40-42 million prostitutes in the world (UN, 2009), of which 75% are between 13-25 years old. More than nine out of ten prostitutes depend on a pimp.

Prostitution is one of the drivers of the prevalence of HIV/Aids in Africa. Prostitution in the past was taboo, it was something done in darkness and very discreetly, but today women solicit out in the open during the day.

Is there hope for someone who has experienced being trafficked or gone through prostitution?
