Mourning
Mourning is grief over someone’s death. It also describes a cultural complex of behaviours in which the bereaved participate or are expected to participate.
According to United Nations Statistics, in 2019 it is estimated that there were 258 million widows around the world with 585m children. Of these, 38m widows live in extreme poverty where basic needs are unmet.
African countries have among the world’s highest mortality rates. Death and funeral rituals in Africa are deeply rooted in the cultural beliefs, traditions, and religions of the continent.
Widows are unfortunately hit the hardest from African mourning rituals and practices. They face various forms of discrimination, stigmatisation, oppression, and deprivation and thus suffer deplorable abuse and powerlessness.
