Modern slavery all around us, but often just out of sight. People can become entrapped in making our clothes, serving our food, picking our crops, working in factories, or working in houses as cooks, cleaners or nannies.

Modern slavery takes many forms.

– Human trafficking
– Forced labour
– Debt bondage/bonded labour
– Descent–based slavery
– Slavery of children (trafficking, soldiers, child marriage)
– Forced and early marriage.

Globally, slavery generates as much as $150bn (£116bn) in profits every year, more than one third of which is generated in developed countries, including the EU.

Africa is the world’s epicenter of modern-day slavery. The region has the highest rate of prevalence, with 7.6 people living in modern slavery for every 1,000 people in the region.
